No Questions Asked Abortions

Daily Telegraph - 23/2/12

Abortion investigation: doctors filmed agreeing illegal abortions 'no questions asked'

• Doctors filmed agreeing to abortions based on gender
• "I don't ask questions," doctor tells pregnant woman
• Health Secretary Andrew Lansley “extremely concerned"
• Questions for watchdog over 'abortion on demand' industry

Doctors at British clinics have been secretly filmed agreeing to terminate foetuses purely because they are either male or female. Clinicians admitted they were prepared to falsify paperwork to arrange the abortions even though it is illegal to conduct such “sex-selection” procedures.

Is this the natural consequence of the changing attitudes in the UK? Why do you think this is front page news? What do you think the ultimate consequences will be?

  1. This a typical misleading article. Majority of women perform an abortion and will perform an abortion out of great necessity. It is a medical intervention and nobody in normal mental state will do it unless necessary. Reasons for an abortion varies: From accident to a severe disable foetus. Women who have the right of choice in this country must keep it. In many other parts of the world women are subjected to clandestine abortions - to death or severe injuries and/or poverty because they can't work and they have the burden to bring the child on their own. Other facts omitted in this sensationalist article shows most pregnancies are terminated in the first 12 weeks where there is not foetus formed. Please inform it to your students otherwise this is cheap anti abortion propaganda. If doctors are performing abortions on the basis of gender discrimination is highly unethical and it is against the law, please call the police to open an investigation if you have the evidence but the whole idea begs the question, what is your point Mr Lewis, shall we ban abortion?

  2. There is a video linked to in the post detailing a situation where an abortion is offered based on gender, I can only presume the police are now involved as you correctly point out, it is against the law. The evidence is on the Telegraph website, as linked. I'm not sure it is my job to call the police about a front page news story?!

As it is front page news in the UK this morning, I posted it as a topic for debate - the gender selection process - it is not a call to ban all abortions, it is also not 'cheap anti-abortion propaganda'. It also directly links into work we have been doing with Y12 on IVF and the selection processes which are involved in that.

It feels like your post is purely Pro-Choice without much regard for the actual content and rationale behind the post. Why is it so misleading as a topical post?

  3. I think doctors should ask questions because some girls use abortion as just an easy method, I think its up to people if they have an abortion as long as they have a good reason to do it.
